3½-Year-Old Female Patient Referred for Genital Reconstruction (Hendren Patient Case)

Case Overview: 
  • 3½-year-old female patient was referred in March 1978 for genital reconstruction
  • Prior management had been frequent catheterization of the urogenital sinus opening to relieve urine trapped in the vaginas, plus antibiotics
Follow Up: 
  • Patient was age 38 years in 2013 and leads a normal life
  • She is continent of urine and stool despite the short urethra and anterior ectopic anus
  • Had there been a problem with either of those important functions (A) the urethra would have been lengthened and (B) the anus would have been moved back where most of her perineal muscle is located
